Although I aim for about fifty new books each year, I have also been known to read the same books over and over again.
Not just once or twice … we’re talking dozens of times.
At one point, I could recite entire passages from one of my favorite young adult book series by heart.
Wondering why the heck I’d bother reading something I’ve already read? The answer is simple … and also complicated.
Comfort was a big factor when I was a teenager. The familiarity of picking up a book I’d already read, and knowing what it was going to say, was soothing.
Access was another factor. Our city library was is very small, and I didn’t often get to larger libraries to borrow books. We didn’t have the resources financially to keep up with my reading habits, either (I didn’t have an e-reader at the time).
These days, I don’t re-read books nearly as often … but I still revisit old favorites.
Part of this is due to the fact that the details have slipped from my memory in the years that have passed since I’ve read the books (the movies – although often quite wonderful – don’t count!).
Whether or not someone else should spend time re-reading is a hard question to answer, and definitely on a case-by-case basis.
Generally though, for those short on time, or who don’t read very much, I would recommend skipping the re-read and enjoying as many new books as you can – there are so many wonderful books out there, and you never know when you will stumble upon a new favorite.
If you read a lot, or have more time to read, there is absolutely no harm in enjoying favorites multiple times! Especially if you have trouble retaining the details (as I often do).
Hey there! If you enjoyed reading about this topic, you’d probably enjoy reading about Why I Read Many Books at One Time too!!
I’m curious. Do you re-read books, or are you done after one read through? Let me know in the comments below.
