Even prior to this pregnancy (my first), I suffer with consistent nausea … pregnancy has just taken that nausea to a whole new level. Morning sickness just made sense in this case because it’s probably a more common issue.
In the first trimester (for some unfortunate souls, most or all of the pregnancy) morning sickness makes staying on plan with Trim Healthy Mama quite difficult. It’s easy to binge on “easy” carbs, things that are quick to grab and eat, more likely to stay down.
What I’m Doing to Stay on Plan Despite Morning Sickness:

- Hiring a Trim Healthy Mama coach – technically I was gifted the services of a coach of my choosing by a family member, but for our purposes, if you can afford it, hiring a Trim Healthy Mama coach makes a huge difference in staying on plan or not (at least it did for me!). I just made sure to choose a coach who was currently pregnant (or has been pregnant recently) to make sure they understood what I was going through.
- Drinking good girl moonshine or Zevia or other on plan carbonated beverages every day – my coach suggested good girl moonshine with club soda for the nausea, and it has made so much difference. But when I’m not up to making myself a GGMS, I’ll drink a Zevia or other carbonated drink to help my stomach “settle”.
- Wasa Crackers – the light rye are probably the most cracker-like for me, and I take two and smear them with a (divided) wedge of laughing cow cheese to make them even better. The cheese is divided between multiple crackers, so it’s not as likely to upset my stomach, and the crackers help with the settling.
- Light Progresso canned soups – if you don’t feel up to making your own soup, quick and easy “personal choice” items can be life-changing during this challenging time. Broth based soups are especially appealing when nothing else stays down! You could also make your own “ramen” from the recipe in Trim Healthy Table (I love this recipe, but often don’t have the energy to make it right now).
- Mint or peppermint tea – please consult your doctor or other practitioner before drinking herbal tea, but if they give the go-ahead it has helped me immensely.
Give Yourself Grace:
If you happen to go off plan, or even entirely derail, remember to give yourself grace. This is a challenging time, and growing a baby isn’t easy!! Most of all, though, don’t let your mindset make you derail even further – i.e.: I ate (fill in the blank) so I might as well eat (fill in the blank) too. Psst! Worried about mindset? See When You Resent Trim Healthy Mama for more help.
You can derail yourself with your thoughts before you ever derail yourself with your foods!
Keep something in your stomach (you might need to eat a little more frequently than usual) but remember this is not an excuse to graze all day. That isn’t healthy for you or your baby!

[…] If you’ve been following All Behind A Smile for some time, you know that I suffer nausea on a regular basis, even prior to pregnancy … and that pregnancy just made the nausea that much worse (if you’d like to read more about this particular subject, see Morning Sickness and Trim Healthy Mama).
