Although caregiver appreciation day was the previous Friday, it’s never too late (or too early) to remember to show our appreciation towards them.
We could focus on ways to show appreciation, but that’s not the goal with this particular post… instead, it’s more of a why/how type of article. As in, why show appreciation, or how caregivers are helpful/have changed lives.
On that note, living with my mother-in-law changed my life.
She is not my designated caregiver – in fact, until last December, she was the designated caregiver for her husband (now deceased).
Regardless, she has been an invaluable source of help and support, especially with a new baby on the way (due soon!) and a wonderful source of company on my husband’s regular ten hour work days – whereas typically I would be alone at least twelve hours four days a week.
She has pushed me out of my comfort zone, and, and will be helping care for our new baby when he comes. In the meantime, doctor’s appointments, long drives, or just a listening ear – she’s there.
It can be hard to admit to needing help, but it’s important to remember there is no shame in having or needing a caregiver.
Whether it’s just for company, for support, or for something much more involved, everyone needs help with something – some people are just brave enough (or wise enough) to admit it.
Are you a juggler – always trying to keep the balls (symptoms) in the air? If you relate to the prior analogy (click the link for a more in-depth explanation), then you might consider a caregiver of some kind – even if it’s not a traditional experience or caregiver!
There are many types of caregivers. Do you have one? Is it something you would consider a blessing, as I do? Let me know in the comments below.
