They say each pregnancy and subsequent baby changes everything… but I didn’t expect gestational diabetes for the third time to be THAT different. I mean, my first two go-rounds were diet controlled, with overall pretty great numbers… and very little effort compared to this pregnancy. But the “game” has changed.

I probably should have learned a thing or two from my past two pregnancies… come on now! False Comfort with Gestational Diabetes was written after realizing my “methods” came at a potential price. And yet. Here I am planning a hospital birth (after several pregnancy complications early on) instead of the birthing center birth that was AMAZING with my second (or the home birth I’d love to experience) and looking at potential medications to manage my gestational diabetes.
What Makes Round Three Different?
Gestational diabetes for the third time (in my case) means high fasting numbers no matter what methods I have tried. Healthy snack before bed? High fasting. Unhealthy snack before bed? Still high fasting. No food or drink except water after dinner? Yet another high fasting number. In fact, not a single fasting number this pregnancy has been “in range”. From a two time diet controlled gestational diabetes mama, this is a really tough pill to swallow.
My appointment next week will probably see me put on medication to manage my gestational diabetes… which will not only be a first, it would have been what kicked me out of the birthing center had I chosen to go that route this pregnancy. Fortunately, I saw the warning signs early on and chose a hospital birth.
Gestational Diabetes for the Third Time – What Gives?
Although I’ve been wildly off plan this pregnancy (and hope to get my feet under me again with Trim Healthy Mama in the future), the doctors were actually shocked I DIDN’T have full blown diabetes yet, considering I’d been diagnosed as a gestational diabetic twice in the past.
I can only assume my history with Trim Healthy Mama (even as a yo-yo on again off again lately) is what can be thanked for that… because diabetes runs (fairly heavily) in my family.
With that being said, we are looking at close monitoring for both me and baby – I’m already considered “high risk” and then gestational diabetes for the third time gets factored in.. and likely medication to manage this diagnosis.

Considering the Trim Healthy Mama plan for the first time (a low glycemic lifestyle) or looking at coming back and need a refresher? The Trim Healthy Mama Plan book is smaller than the original beast of a book…. so even though it doesn’t include the recipes featured in the original book, I find it less overwhelming.
TL;DR
After repetitive gestational diabetes diagnosis (every pregnancy so far), I’m looking at medication for management because my stubborn fasting numbers will NOT drop to be within range, no matter what I have tried. On the bright side, my LACK of a traditional diabetes diagnosis (while not pregnant) is likely thanks to a history (even on again off again) with Trim Healthy Mama.
