When Idleman opens the book helping us “define the relationship” with Jesus as either a fan or a follower, he makes the question sound so simple.
“Are you a follower of Jesus?”
But just a few chapters in, you realize that Idleman is asking so much more with that “simple” question.
With “Not a Fan” stories at the end of chapters to help the reader understand what fan versus follower could look like (and does for the people in the stories) this is only one way that Not a Fan opens the reader’s eyes and helps convict them.
With a powerful opening to part one, Idleman helps the reader define whether they are a fan or a follower of Jesus… and of course explains the terms. But in short, a fan is more a member of the “club” – interested but not truly invested – while a follower will go wherever, whenever, no matter the cost.
It’s definitely a powerful thought to consider… as the reader ponders which one would define them, in an honest way.
DON’T read this book unless you are prepared to be challenged in ways you never imagined, and convicted when and where you fall short. Jesus didn’t call us to simply sit on a church pew once or twice a week and serve here and there… he called us to surrender everything and follow Him.
Idleman makes it quite clear (I loved the illustration of the baptism of the knights for this) that we can’t truly follow Jesus while still holding back. Whether our holding back is what we watch, or the music we listen to, or even how we spend our money, a follower is all in.. and as Jesus says “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62)
When push comes to shove, this book challenged my beliefs, and made me seriously consider the fan versus follower question for myself… and I highly recommend that all professing Christians give it a read. Or, you know, Christians who believe there is something more to the “Christianity” they have been experiencing, but aren’t sure what that might be. It just might surprise you.
Looking for more books to challenge you and help you grow as a Christian? Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst did just that in my life… making me look at my relationship with food in a different way, and seriously consider where my true loyalties lie.
